With ‘in habit’, Eyes to Argus entered new and exciting territory in the world of post-rock. The band’s latest album is rife with catchy hooks and anthemic choruses, all set to the sprawling, spacious atmospheres of the genre. And that’s why ‘in habit’ stood out when it was released in 2021 through Post. Recordings. The first pressing of the LP largely sold out around the world and the album was featured extensively on renowned YouTube channel WherePostRockDwells. In October, Eyes to Argus celebrated ‘in habit’ with a visually stunning release show at Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta.

bio

Eyes to Argus has a different sound that feels familiar. The band began from a long-term friendship and out of a shared love for post-rock, shoegaze, and ambient. Their sound today has a home in those genres but doesn’t reside there. Eyes to Argus’s songs are melancholic and uplifting, and distinctly catchy.

‘in habit’ is the second album by Eyes to Argus. It was released in July 2021 via Post. Recordings (Indianapolis, US). The album was pressed for vinyl by dunk!pressing (Belgium) and distributed in the US, EU, and Malta.

Eyes to Argus signed with Post. Recordings in 2020. Kicking off their collaboration was a re-release of the band’s 2019 single ‘Microcosm’. The band released their debut album ‘VEER’ independently in 2017.

A well-known name in the Maltese music scene, Eyes to Argus have played at many of the island’s top alternative festivals and have shared the stage with esteemed international acts such as Mokadelic, Staghorn, and Yndi Halda.

in habit

‘in habit’ is an album about the spaces we share. We experience the same spaces differently, which is why the album is so emotionally diverse. The music on ‘in habit’ is melancholic, uplifting, brooding, and affirmative. And whichever emotion comes through the most all depends on how you inhabit the spaces that these songs represent.

The six tracks on in habit are each symbolized by a different part of a house, and the band discuss personal stories about the spaces they grew up in, the spaces that changed throughout the years, and the people within and around those spaces. But Eyes to Argus wanted ‘in habit’ to be about more than their own stories.

They reached out six local visual artists to each create an artwork for a song on the album. These artists were Sam Falzon, Elisa von Brockdorff, Moira Zahra, Theo Cachia, Malcolm Alden, and Matthew Cardona. The band also enlisted the guidance of YMCA Malta, who provided a fountain of wealth and inspiration about the themes at hand.

The artworks are included in the ‘in habit’ vinyl package as a postcard set that also acts as the lyric sheets.

“The song’s cloudy whimsy seems particularly accessible thanks to the melodic strength and relatively unencumbered sound. It’s billowing, but not unwieldy — instead, the track appears personal, like a solitary journey through some strangely unfamiliar yet decidedly promising environment. The song feels like it brings a bit of the cosmos down to earth."

“As a band, we kind of embrace this idea of our music being emotively ambiguous, for lack of a better term. You might find the music melancholic or uplifting, depending on who you are as a person. We’re not writing music with an aim to be happy or sad – and we don’t really write lyrics to resolve topics in our head."

“Un groupe qui pratique une musique se plaçant un peu dehors des sentiers « balisés » du genre, entre mélancolie scintillante et chansons douces amères,"
